Test 12: Address and Phone Number

In our continuing effort so show some of the issues in using a GEDCOM file to share information. the Address and Phone Number issue will be addressed here. They have appeared in previous tests, but not investigated.

For this test, and address was added to Family Tree Maker Version 2011.

This is an Address Fact entry. As has been discussed earlier, each Fact in Family Tree Maker can have a Date / Place, Date / Place / Description or Description Only. Since the street address should be in the Description Field (bottom field), the address was entered.

Adding the phone number, as only a Description entry:

The full Fact screen for this test individual is:

A GEDCOM file is then created:

0 @I1@ INDI
1 NAME Place /Name/
1 SEX U
1 BIRT
2 PLAC Bristol, Sullivan, Tennessee, USA
1 BURI Round Hill Cemetery
2 PLAC Marion, Smyth, Virginia, USA
1 ADDR 1114 Windsor Avenue
2 PLAC Bristol, Sullivan, Tennessee, USA
1 PHON 888-555-1111
1 RESI 1114 Windsor Avenue
2 PLAC Bristol, Sullivan, Tennessee, USA
0 TRLR

That GEDCOM file was opened in Roots Magic 4. There were not errors indicated on the import. Here is the Persons screen in Roots Magic 4

The address is there but the Phone Number is NOT.

It should be noted that the Address information was in the Description field and NOT in the Address field that Roots Magic uses.

Understanding that a .LOG file is generated when a GEDCOM is imported into both Family Tree Maker and Roots Magic, an error was discovered.

Unknown info (line 26)
2 PLAC Bristol, Sullivan, Tennessee, USA

Here is what Line 26 looks like:

1 PHON 888-555-1111

Looking at the GEDCOM 5.5 it appears that the format is correct. However, how and where this entry should be, may be the problem in the GEDCOM Standard.

As a follow up to the Phone Number issue, the Phone Number FACT properties was changed to be Date / Place / Description. A new GEDCOM file was generated and imported into Roots Magic 4. The same results. No error message or warning, but the Phone number did not appear. The LST (log file) showed the same line ignored and that basic format of the GEDCOM file did not change.

Another Follow Up. And this is a User Error. The Address and Phone Number, in fact are in Roots Magic 4, in an appropriate Address Button for the person involved. So, ALL of the information was transferred into Roots Magic 4. The user apologizes.

Please note that the statement "It should be noted that the Address information was in the Description field and NOT in the Address field that Roots Magic uses." FTM is completely wrong in using the structure:

1 RESI 1114 Windsor Avenue

The RESI tag can not carry a value/entry following it based on the 5.5 or 5.5.1 standard.

Please note that the FTM structure used:

1 RESI 1114 Windsor Avenue

Is totally wrong based on the GEDCOM 5.5 or 5.5.1 standards. And should be noted in the documents. Roots Magic should kick it out as an error as well.

You said "Looking at the GEDCOM 5.5 it appears that the format is correct.".

In GEDCOM 5.5, PHON only appears at level 1 in the address structure of a submitter record. As far as I can see it does not appear at level 1 in an individual record at all.

So all you are really saying is that you used an extension to GEDCOM in one program, and it appeared differently in another program. SO what. This has no bearing on GEDCOM at all.
